Jane Brotchie: writer and editor
I have been a freelance writer and editor for 20 years and am published widely.
My experience and knowledge is rooted in voluntary/non-profit sector work, health and social policy, research and service user involvement.
Before retraining as a journalist (London College of Printing), I worked as a qualified dramatherapist with people with disabilities and as a research and development worker for a carers’ organisation. You can read more about my early career in my CV/Résumé.
I have a special interest and expertise in writing open/distance learning materials. I have co-authored several modules that are now delivered by the Open University. For many years, these were written in 'hard copy' but now I prepare materials for online as well as face to face work. I have a good understanding of the pedagogy of online learning and have trained in the Application of Online Learning (NIACE, 2009). In 2010 I qualifiied to be a European Net Trainer, or online tutor, and I continue to update my skills in Moodle and online facilitation through my personal learning networks.
I enjoy sharing my skills and offer mentoring for professionals who would like support for their writing at work. This is conducted using skype and other online technologies.
How I work
My approach is to involve my clients in the process of writing and developing ideas. I prefer to consult on drafts and I encourage people to contribute their ideas as I go. I have experience of – and am very comfortable with – virtual working relationships. I always deliver on time.
